Container line reliability improves to just over 50%

Maersk the most reliable container carrier in September while Wan Hai was the poorest performer in the top 13 lines

After three consecutive months of declines in container line schedule reliability analyst Sea Intelligence recorded a small improvement in September.

Sea Intelligence’s Global Liner Performance report showed a 0.9 percentage point month-on-month improvement in overall schedule reliability to 50.6% for September. However, reliability remains sharply down from a peak 64.5% in May. The analyst did not explain the reason behind the improvement in September, however, congestion in China where major ports had been badly impacted by severe weather has started to improve.

While there was a month-on-month improvement of overall in September none of the top 13 container lines saw an improvement in schedule reliability year-on-year.

Among the 13 largest container lines Maersk recorded the highest score with a reliability of 64.8%. Following Maersk was Gemini Cooperation partner Hapag-Lloyd with schedule reliability of 60.4%, then MSC and CMA CGM followed with 57.7% and 51.8%, respectively.

The least reliable of the top 13 lines was Wan Hai a schedule reliability of 26.7%.

In terms of alliances MSC, which is the only major line to operate on a standalone basis on the major trades with tie ups on individual routes, was the most reliable with 68.9% schedule reliability. It was followed by Gemini with 68.4% - well below its 90% reliability target.

Of the other major alliances the Ocean Alliance had a schedule reliability of 44.8%. and the Premier Alliance was the least reliable carrier alliance with schedule reliability of 41.5%.
