Shyam, a veteran in Airfreight Operations and with MFC since 1999, shares his insights on how Airfreight has evolved and its challenges in this ever-changing industry.

What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced in your career at MFC?

I experienced one of the most challenging times of my career during the COVID pandemic. There were a lot of hardships for everyone on a personal level, but from a working perspective it was crazy. Limited staffing at the airport, part shipment arrivals, everyone needed their cargo in a rush, and shipments lying uncleared at the airport by customers leading to a massive space crunch. All these factors made our days very hectic, and there were days I would reach home past midnight. Luckily my house is near Dubai Cargo Village, so I do not have to travel much, but my other colleagues were not so lucky. Despite all of this chaos, the number one key to successfully navigating it, was – communication - the need to keep customers updated in a timely manner on the status of their shipments.
We were always good at keeping our customers informed, but during COVID, we had to work on new platforms, using all the communication tools available such as Zoom and WhatsApp, creating customer groups and ensuring everyone was informed.
We have continued with this and these new tools help keep the information flowing quickly allowing customers to tweak their plans accordingly if a need arises.

You have seen this industry evolve for more than 2 decades years, what has changed the most?

I've had the privilege of working in the air freight industry for 25 years and when I first started, documentation was entirely manual, relying on paper-based processes and physical signatures. However, over the years, I've seen a remarkable shift towards digitalization. Today, most documentation is electronic, with digital signatures, online portals, and automated data exchange. This change has greatly improved efficiency, reduced errors, and increased transparency. It's amazing to think about how far we've come, and I'm excited to see what the future holds for our industry.

What do you enjoy the most about coming to work?

It has to be the camaraderie and shared passion for the work, and the team drive to deliver exceptional service, which helps set us apart. What I enjoy the most is seeing my team thrive and grow together. We celebrate each other's successes and learn from our challenges.  When you walk into our office, you can feel the energy and sense of belonging. It's not just a workplace; it's our home away from home. And that's what makes our company truly special, and that’s what makes it fun to turn up every day.
